Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have destroyed at least 25 newly constructed buildings intended for returning residents in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
During the insurgency’s peak, Dikwa residents fled their homes and sought refuge as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
However, insurgents later attacked a remote village in Gajibo, days after abducting IDPs gathering firewood in the forest. They shot sporadically and set fire to over 25 newly constructed houses.
Modu Kundiri, an eyewitness traveling from Gomboru to Maiduguri, stated that they were delayed for about three hours by troops in Logomani village.
“I saw and counted more than 25 newly constructed houses in Gajibo village in Dikwa LGA on fire,” Modu said.
A resident of Dikwa town, Sheriff Lawan, confirmed the incident, adding that the insurgents also planted many improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the construction site to disrupt the state government’s rebuilding and resettlement efforts.
“The soldiers told us that the insurgents planted many IEDs at the construction site, and they have already found some bombs,” Sheriff said.
Gajibo town is approximately 110 kilometers away from Maiduguri, the state capital.
