The Lagos State Building Control Agency has said that developers must secure a letter of authorisation before commencing construction on any building in any part of the state.

The General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency, Gbolahan Oki, stated this on the sideline of the presentation of letters of authorisation to developers of the Lagos Arena recently.

Oki said, “The letter of authorisation to commence construction of the building in the state can only be issued to developers and builders after obtaining the necessary building/planning permit and it is a document to show that LASBCA officials are fully aware of the development and are conducting regular supervisions at every stage of the development.”

He disclosed that along with the authorisation letter for construction, LASBCA issued a green sticker, which allows the agency to conduct inspections at various stages of construction.

He noted that this would ensure that buildings are safe and habitable for occupants and owners.

Oki stated, “Before the commencement of any building construction in Lagos State owners/developers must approach LASBCA with their building plan approval, where the letter of authorisation to commence construction would be issued to them.

“The letter of authorisation will enable the LASBCA professional team comprising of builders, architects, engineers, among others to carry out stage-by-stage inspections of the building construction from foundation to completion level. Thereafter on completion of the project, a certificate of completion and fitness for habitation will be issued to the owner of the building.”

Meanwhile, Oki cautioned building material producers, particularly block makers, against compromising the quality of their products due to the skyrocketing costs of cement and other reinforcement materials in the construction.

He emphasised that such actions could adversely impact the structural integrity of newly constructed buildings.

He further urged the building public to always build by the rules as that would make the building process seamless and they should also invite LASBCA for stage-by-stage inspection of their building constructions after the letter of authorisation to commence construction must have been issued to them.
