In order to encourage improved affordability and accessibility in housing construction, stakeholders have advocated for the issuance of an Executive Order by the Lagos State Governor that would significantly reduce the cost of permits, especially for low-income and mixed-income housing structures.

They also demanded that the Affordable/Mixed-Income Housing Bill, which encourages and supports the development of affordable and mixed-income housing projects, be finalized and passed. The Lagos State Housing Policy is a crucial document for promoting the development of mixed-income and low-income housing.

the stakeholders presented their recommendation at the Lagos State Development Plan 2052 and Community Infrastructure Projects Dissemination Workshop, which was organized by the University of Lagos’ Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development (CHSD-UNILAG) and Rethinking Cities Initiative (RCI) in association with Heinrich Böll Stiftung (HBS) in Lagos.

The attendees also supported the resuscitation of the real estate developers’ project, a strategic endeavour in which corporate firms are given land to build residences and other infrastructure.
They stated that the development of low-income and mixed-income housing should be given priority in the reinvigorated strategy, and they also suggested putting in place a strong three-year plan that would see the construction of mixed-income housing projects around Lagos carried out gradually.

The participants believe that the real estate developers’ initiative, a calculated move that provides business organizations with land for the construction of homes and essential infrastructure, ought to be resuscitated.
The construction of low-income and mixed-income housing should be prioritized in the reenergized approach, they added , and they proposed the creation of a thorough three-year plan committed to the incremental implementation of mixed-income housing projects around Lagos state.
